Nightlife:
Whether you’re a music or theatre fan or
just a night-owl, Amsterdam will fulfil all your
expectations. Nightlife is concentrated in three
districts, winter and summer. Full of restaurants,
theatres, bars and jazz clubs. Leidseplein is the
haunt, fairly well –behaved people. The real
heartbeat of Amsterdam nightlife can be heard around
Rembrandtplein. This is where you’ll find
the coolest bars, the weirdest clubs and the wildest
people. As soon as the weather improves the streets
are filled with music and musical events, most
of which can be enjoyed for free. There are open-
air rock, pop and jazz concerts and brass bands,
particularly in Vondelpark. Don’t bother
with a classy wardrobe if you’re going out
in Amsterdam. The ambiance is relaxed wherever
you go.
Cafes:
Around 8pm the beer and spirits start to flow.
Barriers between different sections of society
are broken in the cafes where Amsterdammers prefer
to spend their evenings out and where they can
sit every night. There is an enormous choice of
cafes from unpretentious local cafes to the ‘brown
cafes’ and you can easily move around from
one to another where you will receive a warm welcome.
Shopping in Amsterdam:
In general most shops are open between 1 and 6pm
on Mondays and 9 to 6pm Tuesday to Friday. You’ll
find shops open on Sundays in the city centre
on Kalverstraat, Damrak and near the Noorderkerk
particularly in Herenstraat. Several markets
are also held on Sundays including the one specialising
in contempory art, bric-a-brac and second hand
goods. You’ll find a multitude of independent
designers who have developed original styles
from smart and conservative to wild and wacky
but all at affordable prices.
