The Beguinage- where history and culture meet

 

The Beguinage is an island of calm on Spui square a stone’s throw from the buslte of
Kalverstraat. The city’s most famous ‘brown café’ is located here as well as two trendy cafes and a fantastic bookshop.

The Beguinage
A narrow vaulted passageway leads to this charming garden surrounded by 17th and 18th century houses. In the centre of the lawn standa a medievel church, while no. 34 is the city’s oldest house, built of wood and dating from 1477.

Amsterdam Historical Museum
History unfolds step by step in this very informative museum housed in a former orphanage, built in the 15th century and extended in the 17th. Everyday life in Amsterdam since the 13th century is conveyed through art, maps and models.

Lucius
This is the best fish restaurant in town. Here you can eat fish and seafood specialities, served without fuss, and with a great choice of liqueurs and spirits to complement a fine meal. With its simple décor and friendly atmosphere it’s one to remember.

Gallery of the Civil Guard
This covered passage, between the historical museum and the Beguine convent, houses huge portraits of the civil guard who were charged with protecting one of the eleven districts of the city. These men dressed as archers, crossbow-men and soldiers look as if they spent more time dining than on the battlefield!
