This is the beating heart of the city, where there’s
always something going on amid the neon signs and
fast-food outlets. Around the square, fine monuments
testity to the Calvinist philosophy of money, religion
and hard work, values attacked by the Provos, who
made their headquarters here. The cities ugliest
monument, a concrete obelisk commemorating Dutch
victims of war, has becomea meeting point for new-
style hippies, punks and a variety of lost souls.
New Church
This church was built in the flamboyant gothic
style and has been modified many times over the
years. Today it houses exhibitions and concerts.
It’s stained glass, bronze chandeliers
and suberb choir stalls are perfectly complemented
be the sparse, Calvinist interior. All the kings
and queens of the Netherlands have been crowned
here in accordance with tradition.

Beurs van Berlage
This imposing building sited along Damrak, was
designed be H.P Berlage. In 1903 its sober, functional
style represented a complete break with the past.
There is a fine view of the city from the top
if it’s tower if you can manage the 95
very steep steeps. The large hall with its perfect
acoustics, home of the Netherlands Philharmonic
Orchestra, stages concerts all year round.

De Drie Fleschjes
The city’s finest proeflokaal was first founded by the Boots
distillery in 1650. This is the place where journalists and stockbrokers
congregate at the end of the day where they drink a few borrels
of jenever. They also have a unique collection of portraits of the
mayors of Amsterdam here, all painted on little bottles.
