The Museum Quarter

 

As well as being home to two of the cities most famous museums this area also contains the popular Vondelpark. A haven of greenery in the heart of Amsterdam, there are trendy cafes and free concerts and shows in the open-air theatre during the summer months.

National Museum
This collection, with Rembrandt’s Night Watch at its centre, is like a family album of Dutch painting including works by Vermeer, Frans Hals and many other masters. Don’t miss the new exhibition of Asiatic art in the south wing or the exquisite collection of dolls houses.

Van Gogh Museum
This museum houses the most complete collection of this extraordinary and well loved painter’s works in the world. Some 200 paintings and 550 sketches show Van Gogh in all his moods , from the sombre tones of the Potato Eaters to the bright yellows and blues of Provence, and taken to the extremes in the reds and blacks of his Wheatfield with Crows .

Café Welling
The pavement behind the Concertgebouw is filled with tables all summer long. This ‘brown café’ frequented by the young and trendy, is a welcome relief from the more expensive spots near by. The musicicans have their own special table.

Concertgebouw
In 1888 a new concert hall was built on piles at the heart of the residental districts, then under construction. The neo-Classical façade hides an auditorium with exceptional acoustics, which have given the concert halll its great reputation. It is also famous for its orchestra of early instruments.
